We recently connected with Ryan Lee, Co-founder and CEO of Heron Airbridge to discuss Heron’s role within our association and the UTM value chain.
In Southeast Asia, UAS Traffic Management is more than an aviation safety solution; it is the vital other half of counter-drone operations. Because the region frequently views drones primarily as a security risk, scaling commercial operations requires us to change the narrative. By combining robust UTM digital infrastructure with native Remote ID technology, we can actively mitigate these security anxieties, giving authorities the confidence they need to unlock the skies and scale commercial drone ecosystems.

What kind of services does heron airbridge provide?
At Heron, we provide a unified software platform designed to scale commercial drone operations by bridging the gap between hardware, flight management, and airspace safety. Our Airbridge platform seamlessly integrates three core pillars critical to the drone ecosystem:
- Fleet & Mission Management: Enabling operators to efficiently deploy, track, and manage complex drone operations.
- UAS Traffic Management (UTM): Providing the essential digital infrastructure to manage low-altitude airspace safely.
- Airspace Surveillance: Delivering real-time situational awareness for a wide range of aviation and security stakeholders.
To complement our software, we have developed our own native remote ID hardware: the AirBeep series of direct and network remote ID trackers and the AirSpot remote ID ground sensor. This creates a tightly integrated end-to-end ecosystem. By anchoring our software platform with robust, secure hardware, we provide the level of operational assurance that is absolutely critical to satisfying public security agencies and building community trust.
Crucially, Heron is not just a technology developer; we are also an active commercial drone operator based in Singapore. We hold operator permits that allow us to conduct complex flight tests involving new aircraft types, advanced payloads, and counter-drone systems. We also hold approvals for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) low-risk operations.
Operating in one of the most densely populated and tightly regulated airspaces in the world gives us a direct feedback loop. We use our firsthand operational experience to develop, refine, and battle-test our product features. Once proven in Singapore, we leverage this deep expertise to support and empower drone operators in international markets outside of our home region.
What role does your company play within GUTMA?
Heron occupies a highly unique position at the nexus of commercial drone operations, UTM deployment, Remote ID technology, and counter-drone operations.
As the only GUTMA member organization in Southeast Asia, we proudly serve as the Regional Ambassador for the Global UTM Association. Southeast Asia is currently in the very early, foundational stages of UTM regulation development. Most nations in this region are beginning their regulatory journeys by focusing on Remote ID frameworks, mirroring the evolutionary paths taken by the USA and Singapore.
Our role within GUTMA is to act as the vital bridge between global UTM standards and the localized realities of Southeast Asia. We represent a region where drones are often viewed through the lens of national security rather than just aviation safety. By sharing our unique operational experience, we help GUTMA understand the distinct regulatory, geopolitical, and technical requirements of our region, while simultaneously promoting global harmonization and UTM best practices across Southeast Asia.
